This guide works only from the Department of Posts' own documents for Schedule-II, July-2026: the notification, the circle-wise list of posts and the official engagement portal.

PapersAdda is an independent placement and exam information site. We are not affiliated with the Department of Posts, India Post, or the GDS Online Engagement Portal, and we do not process applications, payments, or documents on anyone's behalf.

Which Address to Trust for Results

This schedule's notification names indiapost.gov.in/gdsonlineengagement as the only place to submit applications, and says the list of shortlisted applicants will be released on the GDS Online Engagement Portal. Type that address yourself rather than clicking a link forwarded on WhatsApp or a job-alert page.

Another Department of Posts address, indiapostgdsonline.gov.in, is not named anywhere in this schedule's notification. As checked on 28 September 2026, its TLS certificate (issued to the Department of Posts by emSign SSL CA) had expired on 27 September 2026, so browsers showed a security warning instead of the page. Whatever that address shows when you read this, use the portal address the notification names, and never click past a browser security warning on a site that asks for your registration number or password.

A short safety checklist before you log in: check that the address bar reads indiapost.gov.in, not a lookalike with extra words or a different ending. The notification says the Department does not make any phone calls to applicants or shortlisted candidates, and asks applicants not to disclose their personal information, registration number, mobile number or email ID to others. The portal's security notice, live on 28 September 2026, says the Department "communicates information only through official email IDs ending with @indiapost.gov.in or @indiapostgdsonline.gov.in" and is not responsible for "misleading communication/fraudulent emails/messages" from anyone else, so treat a result or offer from any other address as fraud. For queries, use the division-wise helpdesk numbers listed on the official portal; the notification says the Department will not entertain queries on any other number.

How Many Posts: 23,757 Across 23 Circles

The portal's "Circlewise Posts Notified" list for this schedule totals 23,757 posts: 10,640 UR, 4,433 OBC, 3,082 SC, 2,773 ST, 2,160 EWS, and 669 across the four PwBD sub-categories. The ten largest circles:

CirclePosts notified
North Eastern2,614
Maharashtra2,431
Tamil Nadu2,118
West Bengal1,762
Uttar Pradesh1,691
Madhya Pradesh1,450
Jharkhand1,379
Kerala1,373
Odisha1,353
Karnataka1,116

Where a circle has more than one local-language group (North Eastern, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Assam and Punjab), the figure above adds its language rows together. The smallest circles on the list are Punjab (122), Haryana (87) and Delhi (16). The notification calls these tentative vacant posts, says the division-wise vacancy position is on the portal, and reserves the Department's right to revise the number of posts at any time.

The Three Posts on Offer

The notification covers three categories of Gramin Dak Sevak, each with a different day-to-day job:

PostWhat the job actually involves
Branch Postmaster (BPM)Runs a single Branch Post Office: day-to-day postal operations, India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) transactions, marketing of Department products, and overall responsibility for mail conveyance and delivery in single-handed offices. Must arrange accommodation for the post office at their own cost and live in the post village.
Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM)Sells stamps and stationery, delivers and exchanges mail, handles IPPB deposits and payments, and assists the BPM, including standing in for the BPM when needed. Must reside within the office's delivery area.
Dak SevakWorks in Post Offices, Sorting Offices, Mail Offices, Transit Mail Offices or Delivery Centres: sale of stamps, mail handling and delivery, or bag transhipment, depending on the office. Must reside within the office's delivery jurisdiction.

The notification is unusually direct about what this job is not: GDSs "are not regular employees of the Department/Central Government," their pay and entitlements are not at par with central government staff, and they are governed by a separate rulebook, the GDS (Conduct and Engagement) Rules, 2020, rather than the normal civil service rules. The working day is a minimum of four hours and a maximum of five, and engagement cannot continue past age 65.

Eligibility: Education, Age, Language, and Two Practical Skills

Education. You need a Class 10 (Secondary School Examination) pass certificate, with passing marks specifically in Mathematics and English, from a board recognised by the Central Government, a State Government or a Union Territory. The notification says candidates with an "equivalent qualification" from any other board are not eligible.

Local language. You must have studied the local language prescribed for the post at least up to Class 10. Four states have special provisions in the notification: Arunachal Pradesh (English or Hindi plus one of 23 notified tribal languages), Nagaland (English or Hindi plus one of 19 tribal languages), Sikkim (English plus one of 12 named languages), and Goa (Konkani, or Marathi with separate Konkani proficiency). Annexure III of the notification lists the language prescribed for each post.

Age. Minimum 18 years, maximum 40 years, calculated as on the last date for submitting applications.

CategoryAge relaxation
SC/ST5 years
OBC3 years
EWSNo relaxation
PwBD (general)10 years
PwBD + OBC13 years
PwBD + SC/ST15 years

Two other qualifications the notification lists explicitly: knowledge of computers, and knowledge of cycling. Selected candidates sign formal undertakings on both before engagement, along with a declaration that they have another source of income besides their GDS allowance, since the notification states a GDS "should have another source of income besides the allowances to be paid by the Government for adequate means of livelihood."

Selection Is by Merit List, Not an Exam

There is no written test and no interview. The notification's own selection-criteria section states that applicants are "shortlisted for engagement on the basis of a system-generated merit list," built from your Class 10 marks aggregated to a percentage, worked out to four decimal places.

If your marksheet shows grades instead of marks, the system converts each grade to a mark using a fixed multiplying factor of 9.5 against the grade point (a Grade Point of 10 becomes 95 marks for that subject); a CGPA is converted the same way. One state detail: Tamil Nadu's State Board of School Examinations issued only pass certificates, not marks or grades, for the 2020-21 batch because of the pandemic, and the notification says the system awards a flat 66.67% to those candidates.

Your preferences matter as much as your marks. An applicant could opt for one or more posts, but only within one division, and posts without a preference are not considered. If you rank high enough for more than one of your chosen posts, you are offered only the first one in your own order of preference, and your candidature for the rest is forfeited.

Where two applicants tie on merit, the notification sets a fixed tie-break order based on date of birth (older first) and then a defined sequence across community and gender categories, ending with "UR male" as the last tiebreaker.

TRCA Pay: What GDS Posts Actually Pay

GDS posts are paid a Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA), not a standard pay-band salary. The notification sets the initial slabs as:

CategoryInitial basic TRCA (per month)
Branch Postmaster (BPM)Rs 12,000 to Rs 29,380
Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) / Dak SevakRs 10,000 to Rs 24,470

On top of the basic TRCA, the notification confirms a 3% annual increase (subject to meeting the conditions in the GDS Rules), Dearness Allowance declared periodically by the Government of India, and access to a GDS Gratuity and a Service Discharge Benefit Scheme, which the notification describes as akin to the National Pension System used for regular employees. The division-wise vacancy list carries a TRCA column against every post, so check the figure shown for the exact post you opted for rather than assuming the top of the slab.

Fee and How It Was Paid

The application fee was Rs 100, covering all the posts you opted for in your chosen division. Fee was waived entirely for female applicants, SC and ST applicants, PwBD applicants, and Transwomen applicants. Everyone else paid online by debit card, credit card, net banking or UPI, and the notification is blunt that the fee, once paid, is not refunded.

Where Schedule-II, July-2026 Stood on 28 September 2026

The current cycle's key dates, all from the notification itself:

ActivityWindow
Online One-Time Registration31 August to 19 September 2026 (until 17:00)
Application submission and fee payment2 to 21 September 2026 (until 17:00)
Correction/edit window23 to 24 September 2026 (until 17:00)

As checked on 28 September 2026, all three windows have closed, and the candidate login page states that registration is closed for Schedule-II, July-2026. That puts the process at the shortlisting stage: the notification says the list of shortlisted applicants will be released on the GDS Online Engagement Portal, with shortlisted candidates separately informed by SMS on their registered mobile number and by email. If you applied this cycle, keep checking the portal directly rather than waiting on a forwarded message, since the Department states it is not responsible for a missed SMS or email for any reason.

Once shortlisted, you get 15 days to report for physical verification of documents to the Divisional or Unit Head where your chosen post is located; missing that window gets you marked "non-turned up" and your candidature cancelled automatically. After successful verification, you get a further 30 days to complete joining formalities, including three days of basic training and arranging your own accommodation if you are selected as a BPM. The notification states the whole engagement process for this schedule, including any supplementary lists, closes after 31 December 2026, though the Department can extend this at its own discretion.

Documents to Keep Ready for Verification

The notification lists these as the documents to carry in original, plus two self-attested photocopies of each, at physical verification:

  • Class 10 (SSE) marksheet
  • Identity proof
  • Date of birth proof
  • Caste certificate (if claiming SC/ST/OBC reservation)
  • PwBD certificate (if applicable)
  • EWS income and asset certificate (if applicable)
  • Transgender certificate (if applicable)
  • Medical certificate from a government hospital, government dispensary, or government primary health centre (compulsory for everyone)
  • A local or tribal language proficiency certificate, for the states where the notification requires one (Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Goa, Nagaland)

The notification required applicants to enter their name, date of birth, father's name and mother's name strictly as per the Class 10 marksheet, and says the Department may verify selected candidates' marksheets online through API Setu, DigiLocker or the board's website, rejecting the candidature if the marks or other details do not match. It advises everyone who may be shortlisted to have a DigiLocker account with their marksheet and certificates already fetched into it, which is worth doing now.

If You Missed This Schedule, or a New One Opens Later

Each GDS engagement cycle runs under its own notification and its own registration window. The portal is explicit that a registration number from an earlier schedule carries no weight in a new one: candidates applying for Schedule-II, July-2026 were "required to register afresh," since "Registration Numbers generated in previous schedules will not be valid." If you missed this schedule, watch the official portal for the next notification, the only document that confirms a new cycle's dates, posts and eligibility. This schedule's own engagement process is set to close after 31 December 2026 unless the Department extends it.

WHAT PAPERSADDA THINKS

The single most useful thing in this notification is that GDS selection runs on your Class 10 percentage alone, with no exam and no interview to prepare for, so your real leverage window closed years ago, not this month. What is still in your control is precision: reaching verification inside the 15-day window, carrying every original the notification lists, and making sure the marksheet in DigiLocker matches what you entered. Respect the TRCA framing too: this is a useful government-linked post, but explicitly not a regular salaried job, and treating the entry slab as a full household income sets up a bad surprise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is India Post GDS recruitment based on a written exam?

No. The Department of Posts selects Gramin Dak Sevaks through a system-generated merit list built from your Class 10 (Secondary School Examination) marks, converted to a percentage. There is no written test or interview for BPM, ABPM, or Dak Sevak posts.

What are the TRCA pay slabs for GDS posts in 2026?

The notification sets the initial basic Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA) at Rs 12,000 to Rs 29,380 a month for Branch Postmaster, and Rs 10,000 to Rs 24,470 a month for Assistant Branch Postmaster and Dak Sevak, with a 3% annual increase and separate Dearness Allowance on top. This is an allowance, not a regular government salary scale.

What is the status of GDS Online Engagement Schedule-II, July-2026 as of 28 September 2026?

As checked on 28 September 2026, all three windows have closed: registration (31 August to 19 September 2026), application and fee payment (2 to 21 September 2026) and corrections (23 to 24 September 2026). The candidate portal shows registration closed for this schedule, and the next step is the shortlist.

Is indiapostgdsonline.gov.in still the right website to apply?

Not for this schedule. Its notification names indiapost.gov.in/gdsonlineengagement as the only place to apply and does not mention indiapostgdsonline.gov.in. As checked on 28 September 2026, that other address's security certificate had also expired, so browsers showed a warning. Type the portal address yourself rather than searching for a login link.

What documents do I need if I am shortlisted?

The notification lists your Class 10 marksheet, identity proof, date of birth proof, caste certificate if claiming reservation, PwBD certificate if applicable, EWS certificate if applicable, transgender certificate if applicable, a medical certificate from a government medical officer, and, for a few states, a local-language proficiency certificate. Carry originals plus two self-attested photocopies of each.

Do I need to know cycling and computers to become a GDS?

Yes. The notification lists knowledge of computers, knowledge of cycling, and having another adequate source of livelihood as eligibility conditions, and selected candidates submit signed undertakings confirming all three before engagement.

What happens if I miss Schedule-II, July-2026, or a new schedule opens later?

This schedule's engagement process closes after 31 December 2026, with no further supplementary lists, unless the Department extends it. A new schedule needs a fresh registration: the portal says registration numbers from previous schedules are not valid, so watch the official portal and register afresh when the next one opens.

How many GDS posts are there in Schedule-II, July-2026?

The portal's circle-wise list of posts notified totals 23,757 posts across 23 postal circles: 10,640 UR, 4,433 OBC, 3,082 SC, 2,773 ST, 2,160 EWS and 669 PwBD. The largest are North Eastern (2,614), Maharashtra (2,431) and Tamil Nadu (2,118). The notification calls these tentative vacant posts, and the Department can revise the number of posts.
