IBPS RRB Clerk Office Assistant 2026 exam pattern, eligibility and preparation plan

The detailed notification for the Common Recruitment Process for RRBs (CRP RRBs-XV) is live on ibps.in, so this page now quotes it directly instead of last-cycle patterns. Every date, fee, age band and mark below comes from the notification dated 1 September 2026 or the corrigenda and vacancy annexures dated 15, 21 and 25 September 2026. The Office Assistant post is one of the most accessible banking entries because it has no interview and allots on the Mains score.

This guide covers the official schedule, eligibility, the local-language rule, the exam structure and a study plan for the weeks before Prelims.

IBPS RRB Clerk 2026 Notification: Key Dates

The dates below are the tentative schedule printed in the CRP RRBs-XV notification. IBPS announces exact exam dates on ibps.in.

ActivityTentative schedule (official notice)
Online registration and fee payment1 September to 27 September 2026 (extended from 21 September by the corrigendum dated 21 September 2026); closed
Edit window to correct the application2 days after registration closes, notified on ibps.in
Pre-Exam Training (where applicable)November 2026
Prelims call letter and Prelims examNovember / December 2026
Prelims resultDecember 2026 / January 2027
Mains examDecember 2026 / February 2027
Provisional allotmentFebruary / March 2027

IBPS's tentative calendar dated 16 January 2026 listed Office Assistant Prelims on 6, 12 and 13 December 2026 and Mains on 30 January 2027. The later notification gives only month windows, so treat the calendar dates as the planning anchor until call letters confirm them.

The notification accepts applications only through the official IBPS registration link for Office Assistants under CRP RRBs-XV on ibps.in, within the registration window, which opened on 1 September and, after an extension, closed on 27 September 2026. You can apply for Office Assistant and also for one officer post, with a separate application and fee for each.

Vacancies: 8,222 Indicative Office Assistant Posts

The corrigendum dated 15 September 2026 updated Annexure I, and IBPS updated it again on 25 September 2026. Summing the 25 September Office Assistant table bank by bank gives 8,222 indicative posts across 28 RRBs, with every bank row the same as on 15 September, and every row's category split adds up to its total. The largest rows are Uttar Pradesh Gramin Bank (1,200) and Andhra Pradesh Grameena Bank (900).

IBPS labels these vacancies indicative and anticipated: provisional allotment follows the actual vacancies RRBs report later. You choose one State or UT in the application, the choice is irrevocable, and allotment stays within the RRBs of that state, so your state's row matters more than the national total.

Eligibility and Local-Language Requirement

CriterionCRP RRBs-XV rule for Office Assistant
EducationBachelor's degree in any discipline
Result dateDegree result declared on or before 21 September 2026
Age (as on 1 Sep 2026)18 to 28 years: born between 2 September 1998 and 1 September 2008, both inclusive
Age relaxationSC/ST 5 years, OBC (non-creamy layer) 3 years, PwBD 10 years; ex-servicemen get service period plus 3 years, up to 50

Local languageEssential qualification

FeeRs 850 for all others, Rs 175 for SC/ST/PwBD/ESM/DESM, both inclusive of GST

The local-language clause is the decisive eligibility detail. The notification treats you as proficient if you studied the state's language at standard VIII or above in a government-recognised board or school, or hold a certificate to that effect. If you do not meet that at selection, you get six months from joining to acquire the proficiency, extendable by the RRB's board but not beyond probation. The Office Assistant upper age limit (28) is two years below Officer Scale 1 (under 30).

Syllabus and Strategy

Numerical Ability

Simplification, number series, data interpretation, quadratic equations, and arithmetic word problems. Speed on simplification and DI decides this section.

Reasoning Ability

Puzzles and seating arrangement, syllogism, coding-decoding, inequality, and direction sense. Puzzles dominate; daily practice is essential.

General Awareness

Banking awareness, recent current affairs, and static GK. The last six months of current affairs plus banking basics are the highest-yield areas.

English or Hindi Language

Comprehension, cloze test, error spotting, and para jumbles. Choose your stronger language.

Computer Knowledge

Hardware, software, internet, and MS Office basics. A quick, high-return section.

Cutoff Framing: Read It Honestly

IBPS RRB Clerk cut-offs are released after the result and vary by RRB, state, and category.

Data note as of 17 September 2026: CRP RRBs-XV cut-offs do not exist yet; they follow the Prelims and Mains results. Past cut-offs vary widely by state and category and should be treated as candidate-reported and indicative only. The official result notice on ibps.in is the binding source.

Because there is no interview, the Mains score is everything. Target a score well above your category's historical band for your state.

Selection Process: Stage by Stage

  1. Preliminary exam: screening on Reasoning and Numerical Ability, with a cutoff in each test.
  2. Main exam: five tests, 200 marks, with a minimum score in each test.
  3. Provisional allotment and document check: on Mains marks within your chosen state, including the local-language proof.

There is no interview for the Office Assistant post, so plan to maximise the Mains score.

A Practical Preparation Plan

From the end of the extended registration window on 27 September 2026 to the January calendar's Office Assistant Prelims dates of 6, 12 and 13 December 2026 is about ten weeks.

PhaseFocusDaily hours
Weeks 1 to 4Numerical ability and reasoning speed under the 25 and 20 minute section timers4 to 5
Weeks 5 to 8DI and puzzles depth, General Awareness and Computer Knowledge for Mains4 to 5
Weeks 9 to 11Prelims full mocks with sectional timing, error audit after each5 to 6
After PrelimsMains-only sections, GA and computer5 to 6

Common Reasons Candidates Lose the Cycle

  • Ignoring the local-language clause. A strong score is wasted if you fail the language requirement.
  • Treating it like an interview exam. With no interview, the Mains score carries everything. Maximise it.
  • Weak puzzles and DI. These decide both stages. Drill daily.
  • Choosing a state on the national vacancy total. Allotment stays within your chosen state, and the choice is irrevocable once submitted.

Best Resources for IBPS RRB Clerk Preparation

  • Numerical ability: a standard banking quant book plus a data interpretation set; speed on simplification and DI decides the section.
  • Reasoning: a puzzles and seating-arrangement focused book for daily set practice.
  • Banking and general awareness: a banking awareness compendium plus a monthly current-affairs digest.
  • English: a grammar reference and daily reading.
  • Mock tests: a Prelims and Mains mock series in the exam interface; with no interview, the Mains score is everything, so Mains mocks matter most.
  • Local language: keep proficiency in the RRB's state language ready for verification.

Because there is no interview, disciplined Mains practice with a mock series is the highest-return preparation for IBPS RRB Clerk.
