Professional Knowledge: The Decisive Section

For IBPS SO, general aptitude alone is not enough, even at the screening stage: the Prelims already carries a 25-question, 50-mark Professional Knowledge test alongside the aptitude and language sections. The Main's Professional Knowledge paper is where selection is actually decided, since every other Main section there is only qualifying. Examples of focus areas:

  • IT Officer: databases, networking, operating systems, software engineering, data structures, and security basics.
  • Agricultural Field Officer: agronomy, soil science, crop production, agricultural economics, and government agriculture schemes.
  • HR Officer: industrial relations, labour laws, recruitment, performance management, and organisational behaviour.

Invest the majority of your preparation in your post's domain. A strong professional-knowledge score is the clearest path to selection.

Cutoff Framing: Read It Honestly

IBPS SO cut-offs are released after the result and vary by post and category, because each specialist post has its own vacancies and applicant pool.

Data note as of 21 September 2026: IBPS SO 2026 (CRP SPL-XVI) cut-offs are not yet available; the Main is not scheduled until 1 November 2026. Past cut-offs vary by post and category and should be treated as candidate-reported and indicative only. The official result and cut-off notice on ibps.in will be the binding source.

Target a strong Professional Knowledge score above your post's historical band, since this paper drives the cut-off.

Selection Process: Stage by Stage

  1. Preliminary exam: 100 questions, 125 marks, 80 minutes, screening with a Professional Knowledge component already included; structure varies by post group.
  2. Main exam: 150 objective questions plus a descriptive paper, 225 marks in all; the Professional Knowledge score alone decides merit.
  3. Interview: 100 marks, with an 80:20 weightage against the Main.
  4. Document verification: including the professional-qualification check.

A Practical Preparation Plan

PhaseFocusDaily hours
Months 1 to 2Professional Knowledge domain depth5 to 6
Month 3Prelims aptitude sections4 to 5
Month 4Prelims mocks plus Professional Knowledge revision6 to 7
After PrelimsProfessional Knowledge intensive plus interview prep6 to 7

Common Reasons Candidates Lose the Cycle

  • Under-preparing Professional Knowledge. It is tested at both stages, 25 questions in the Prelims and 50 in the Main, and the Main's Professional Knowledge score alone decides merit.
  • Wrong qualification match. Applying for a post whose exact qualification you do not meet causes rejection at document verification.
  • Neglecting the interview. The interview carries 100 marks on an 80:20 weightage with the Main. Prepare domain and HR questions.
  • Planning against an old cycle's dates. The CRP SPL-XVI notification is out: registration closed on 21 July 2026, and the Prelims and Main dates are set (see the schedule above). Don't prepare against a stale copy of this page or an old cycle's calendar.

Best Resources for IBPS SO Preparation

  • Professional Knowledge: standard domain textbooks for your post, IT subjects for IT Officer, agriculture sources for Agricultural Field Officer, HR and labour-law references for HR Officer. This is the decisive area, so invest the most here.
  • Aptitude sections: a standard banking reasoning, quant, and English set for the Prelims screening.
  • Current developments: keep up with current affairs in your domain, since Professional Knowledge often touches recent developments.
  • Mock tests: a Prelims mock series plus post-specific Professional Knowledge tests for your stream.
  • Interview: prepare domain questions and common HR questions, since final merit usually includes the interview.

The single highest-return investment for IBPS SO is depth in your post's Professional Knowledge, not breadth across general aptitude.

FAQ, IBPS SO 2026

Q: Do I need a specific degree for IBPS SO? A: Yes. Each Specialist Officer post requires a specific professional qualification. Check your post's clause on ibps.in.

Q: Is the Professional Knowledge paper compulsory? A: Yes. It is tested at both stages, 25 questions in the Prelims and 50 objective questions in the Main (Rajbhasha Adhikari candidates also write a Professional Knowledge descriptive paper), and the Main's Professional Knowledge score alone decides merit.

Q: Is there an interview? A: Yes. The interview carries 100 marks, with a minimum qualifying score of 40% (35% for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD), and the Main-to-interview weightage is 80:20.

Q: When is IBPS SO 2026? A: The CRP SPL-XVI notification came out on ibps.in on 1 July 2026, with registration from 1 to 21 July 2026. Prelims were scheduled for 29 August 2026, per the IBPS calendar, a window that has passed; the Main is scheduled for 1 November 2026.

Q: How many vacancies does IBPS SO have? A: The updated vacancy figures as on 27 August 2026 add up to 1,043 across the six posts, IT Officer 376, Agricultural Field Officer 370, HR/Personnel Officer 60, Marketing Officer 10, Law Officer 125, and Rajbhasha Adhikari 102, summed from the official post-wise totals. The annexure itself prints no grand total and calls the figures indicative.

Q: Can I apply to more than one specialist post? A: No. The notification allows only one post per candidate; multiple applications will be summarily rejected. Choose the post that matches your qualification before you apply.

Q: Is the Prelims structure the same for all SO posts? A: No. IT Officer, Agricultural Field Officer, HR/Personnel Officer, and Marketing Officer take a Quantitative Aptitude test in the Prelims; Law Officer and Rajbhasha Adhikari take General Awareness (with special reference to banking) instead. Both groups sit 100 questions for 125 marks in 80 minutes, including a 25-question Professional Knowledge test.

Q: How long should I prepare for IBPS SO? A: Plan around your Professional Knowledge depth, typically a few months of focused domain study layered with aptitude practice for the screening.

Use this guide for planning. It reflects the official CRP SPL-XVI notification and its 27 August 2026 vacancy update; if IBPS issues a further corrigendum, the notice on ibps.in is binding.
