NPTEL and SWAYAM certification exam calendar and fee structure for 2026

Every date and figure below comes from nptel.ac.in, swayam.gov.in, or the documents those two sites link to, not from a coaching blog repeating last semester's numbers.

What NPTEL and SWAYAM Actually Are

NPTEL stands for the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning. Per NPTEL's own FAQ page, it "is an acronym for National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning which is an initiative by seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) for creating course contents in engineering and science." SWAYAM's own coordinator page for NPTEL dates it to 2003, as "a project of MHRD", the old name for what is now the Ministry of Education.

SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) is the wider platform, a Ministry of Education initiative that hosts courses from several bodies, not just NPTEL. SWAYAM's own About page says "ten National Coordinators have been appointed" and gives each one a lane: NPTEL for engineering, AICTE for self-paced and international courses, UGC for non-technical post-graduation education, CEC for under-graduate education, NCERT and NIOS for school education, IGNOU for out-of-school students, IIMB for management studies, NITTTR for teacher training, and INI (Institutes of National Importance) for non-technical courses. So the relationship in one line: SWAYAM is the government's course platform, and NPTEL is the IIT-and-IISc arm that supplies (and examines) its engineering courses.

NPTEL's certification track is called NOC, NPTEL Online Certification. As NPTEL's own FAQ explains, courses of 4, 8, or 12 weeks are "offered twice a year" through the portal at nptel.ac.in/courses, with current enrolments running on onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in (courses offered before May 2019 sit in a separate archive at onlinecourses-archive.nptel.ac.in). NPTEL's semester page says there are "No pre-requisites, no age limit, no entrance criteria to enroll." Joining and learning are free; only the optional certification exam carries a fee, covered below.

The Jul-Dec 2026 Exam Schedule, As NPTEL Has Published It

NPTEL runs each semester as five course tracks: 4-week and 8-week courses in two sets with different start dates, plus 12-week courses. Its "July - Dec 2026 Semester Timelines and Guidelines" sheet, linked from the nptel.ac.in home page, gives the final deadlines, including the extensions NPTEL granted:

Set 1: 4-week and 8-week courses12-week coursesSet 2: 4-week and 8-week courses

Enrolment closed, after extension3 August 2026, 5 pm3 August 2026, 5 pm20 August 2026, 5 pm
Exam registration and fee deadline, after extensions17 August 2026, 5 pm24 August 2026, 5 pm30 August 2026, 5 pm
Exam dates19 and 20 September 202616, 17, 18, 23, 24 and 25 October 202616, 17, 18, 23, 24 and 25 October 2026
Additional dates18 September 202619 and 26 October 202619 and 26 October 2026

Enrolment opened on 27 May 2026 and exam registration on 20 June 2026 for every track. As checked on 28 September 2026, all of those windows had closed, and the sheet states that the date to register or cancel for an exam "will not be extended any further." What remains is the exam calendar itself, for candidates who registered.

The additional dates are not a second choice for candidates. The sheet says they "cannot be chosen by the candidates" and that students are moved to them if there is not enough capacity on the original date, so check your hall ticket for the date and session NPTEL actually allotted you.

Exams run in two sessions on each date, 9 am to 12 noon and 2 pm to 5 pm, and a candidate can take at most two exams in a day, one per session. Across its eight exam days this semester, NPTEL says a candidate can get certified in 16 courses. Its semester-information page states that exams are held "only in India in about 200+ cities in two shifts," with the learner required to appear in person at an allotted centre where identity is verified.

The Exam Fee, and How the Certificate Score Is Actually Worked Out

Joining an NPTEL course costs nothing. The optional certification exam is where the fee sits: SWAYAM's own NPTEL coordinator page states plainly that "an in-person, proctored certification exam (optional) will be conducted at Rs. 1000/- per course." NPTEL's semester sheet adds the concessions:

CandidateExam fee per course
GeneralRs 1,000
SC/ST or PwD (50% waiver)Rs 500
SC/ST and PwDRs 250
Faculty who want an FDP certificateRs 100 on top of the applicable fee

A candidate claiming a waiver has to upload a valid SC/ST or PwD certificate, and the sheet warns that a registration with an invalid certificate is cancelled without a refund of the exam fee.

The score itself has two components, and NPTEL states the weighting directly on its semester-information page: "25% of the final marks comes from the Assignments and 75% from the final exam." That is the full formula, not a rough split.

There is also a pass floor on each component separately, not just on the combined total. NPTEL's FAQ page says the pass criteria changed from July 2019: a learner passes only if the average assignment score (out of 100) is 40 or above, and the final exam score (out of 100) is also 40 or above. In NPTEL's own words, "to clear the exam you have to score a minimum of 10 out of 25% in the assignment and 30 out of 75% in the final proctored exam." Score well on assignments but badly on the proctored exam (or the reverse) and you can still fail, even if a naive weighted average would have crossed 40. The FAQ also notes that this pass rule differs for courses with non-proctored programming exams and for medical courses, whose criteria are stated on the course's own announcement page, so check that page for anything outside a standard engineering or science course.

Credit Transfer: What the UGC's Own Regulation Actually Allows

SWAYAM advertises credit transfer as one of its core selling points, its homepage lists "Get University Credits: Earn University Credits and get them transferred to your degree" among its stated benefits. That is real, but it is not automatic just because you hold an NPTEL certificate.

The mechanism sits inside a specific regulation named on SWAYAM's own university-facing page: the "Credit Framework for Online Learning Courses through the Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds (SWAYAM) Regulations, 2021." Under this UGC regulation, a university has to choose to adopt SWAYAM courses for credit itself; the credit only transfers if your own institution has done so. Universities must appoint what SWAYAM calls a Nodal Officer, who coordinates "with the SWAYAM Technical team in matters related to SWAYAM Courses including registration and credit transfer."

A newer UGC framework builds on it. It followed "a series of state-level awareness meetings held between October-November 2023 and April-May 2024", and it lets students at universities that have adopted the 2021 regulation take their SWAYAM exams at their own university; it also provides for re-examinations for students who did not pass or could not appear. As SWAYAM's own page puts it, "end-term proctored examinations for SWAYAM courses are conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL)," and the new option sits alongside that route for universities that have signed on.

Practically: ask your own department or your college's SWAYAM Nodal Officer whether your institution has adopted the 2021 regulation and which courses it accepts, before assuming a certificate will convert into credit on your transcript.

Does an NPTEL Certificate Actually Help With Placements?

NPTEL states its own case plainly on its semester-information page, listing the benefits of taking a course. For students, it lists exactly two: "Credit transfer and better resume." For faculty, it lists "Refresher courses, AICTE recognized FDP courses," and for working professionals, "upskilling and reskilling."

Notice what is not in that list: NPTEL does not claim, on any page PapersAdda could load, that its certificate is a hiring requirement or a shortlisting filter, and PapersAdda found no employer careers page listing it as a requirement either. Treat it the way NPTEL itself frames it: a resume line and a credit-transfer option that signals structured, self-directed learning, not a substitute for your core placement preparation.

How to Register and Pick a Course

The mechanics stay the same every cycle, even though the exact dates move each semester:

  1. Browse the current semester's course list at nptel.ac.in/courses or onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in and pick a course relevant to your branch, your GATE preparation, or a skill gap on your resume.
  2. Enrol for free before that course's enrolment deadline, using one email ID for everything; NPTEL does not count assignments submitted from any other email ID towards certification.
  3. Complete the weekly video lectures and submit the graded assignments on time; your assignment average is 25% of your final score.
  4. Register and pay the exam fee (Rs 1,000, or Rs 500 for SC/ST or PwD candidates) before that course's own exam-registration deadline, if you want the certificate rather than just the learning.
  5. Download your hall ticket before the exam (NPTEL makes this the candidate's responsibility), note the allotted city, date and session, and appear in person with valid identification.
  6. After results, download your score card and e-certificate from the NPTEL portal; if your college has adopted the UGC's SWAYAM credit regulation, take the certificate to your Nodal Officer for credit transfer.

Sitting the October Exam: What NPTEL's Rules Say

For candidates on the October dates, NPTEL's semester sheet and exam terms set out the rules that most often catch people out:

  • No request to change the centre, date or time printed on the admit card is entertained, and NPTEL can allot a city other than the three a candidate chose.
  • Physical calculators, mobile phones and wristwatches are prohibited; candidates found with them in the hall "(even if not using)" will be disqualified. An on-screen calculator is provided.
  • No snacks or water are allowed inside the exam hall.
  • A candidate who enters the venue after the stated time, or without the required ID proof, is not allowed to write the exam.
  • NPTEL does not conduct supplementary exams.

After the Exams: Results, Certificates and the Next Semester

The Jul-Dec 2026 exam cycle ends with its last additional date, 26 October 2026. NPTEL's semester sheet says exam scores are published "as and when they are signed off by the concerned course instructor," candidates are notified by email or SMS, and they get 3 days to verify their scores and report errors. NPTEL issues only e-certificates and does not print hard copies.

The next cycle is the Jan-Apr 2027 semester. NPTEL's academic calendar lists its planned exam dates as 20 and 21 March 2027 (19 March additional), then 16 to 18 and 23 to 25 April 2027 (19 and 26 April additional). Watch nptel.ac.in for the Jan-Apr 2027 course list and enrolment dates; for comparison, the Jul-Dec 2026 semester opened enrolment on 27 May 2026, and its first courses began on 20 July.

WHAT PAPERSADDA THINKS

NPTEL and SWAYAM are one of the few genuinely useful, low-cost pieces of public learning infrastructure in India: a real IIT-taught course and a real proctored exam, for an exam fee of Rs 1,000 or less. Where students oversell it to themselves is placements: NPTEL never claims to be a hiring lever, and a recruiter may well treat it as one resume line among many. Our honest advice: pick a course because it plugs an actual gap in what you know, and check with your own department before assuming any credit transfer applies to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between NPTEL and SWAYAM?

SWAYAM is the Government of India's free online course platform, run under the Ministry of Education, and it works through ten National Coordinators. NPTEL, the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning, is one of them, an initiative of seven IITs and IISc that supplies and examines SWAYAM's engineering courses. Other coordinators, such as UGC, AICTE and IGNOU, cover other kinds of courses on the same platform.

What are the official Jul-Dec 2026 NPTEL exam dates?

Per NPTEL's published timetable, Set 1 courses (4 and 8 weeks, started 20 July 2026) sit their exam on 19 and 20 September 2026, with 18 September as an additional date. The 12-week courses (started 20 July) and Set 2 courses (4 and 8 weeks, started 17 August 2026) sit their exam across 16, 17, 18, 23, 24 and 25 October 2026, with 19 and 26 October as additional dates. Candidates cannot choose an additional date; NPTEL moves students to one if an original date runs out of capacity.

How much does the NPTEL certification exam cost?

SWAYAM's NPTEL page states the in-person, proctored certification exam costs Rs 1,000 per course. NPTEL's semester sheet halves that to Rs 500 for SC/ST or PwD candidates and cuts it to Rs 250 for candidates who are both. Enrolling in and learning from the course is free; the fee applies only if you choose to sit the optional exam.

How is the NPTEL certificate score calculated, and what is the pass mark?

The final score weights your assignment average at 25% and your final exam score at 75%. To pass, both parts have to individually reach 40 out of 100. It is not enough for just the combined weighted total to clear it, a rule NPTEL says has applied from July 2019.

Can I transfer NPTEL or SWAYAM course credits to my degree?

Only if your own university has adopted the UGC's Credit Framework for Online Learning Courses through SWAYAM Regulations, 2021 and appointed a Nodal Officer for it. Ask your department or Nodal Officer which SWAYAM or NPTEL courses your institution currently accepts for credit before assuming any certificate will convert automatically.

Does an NPTEL certificate actually help you get placed?

NPTEL's own stated benefit for students is credit transfer and better resume, not a placement guarantee. PapersAdda found no employer page treating an NPTEL certificate as a hiring requirement. Use it to show self-directed learning on your resume alongside your core preparation, not as a replacement for it.

I want to enrol after 28 September 2026. What should I do?

The Jul-Dec 2026 semester's enrolment and exam-registration windows had closed by 28 September 2026. Watch nptel.ac.in for the Jan-Apr 2027 course list; NPTEL's calendar lists that semester's planned exams from 20 March 2027. For comparison, the Jul-Dec 2026 semester opened enrolment on 27 May 2026, and its first courses began on 20 July.
