Quantitative Aptitude Questions with Solutions
Question 1: Number Series
Find the missing number: 2, 6, 12, 20, 30, ?
Solution: The pattern is: n(n+1) where n starts from 1
- 1 × 2 = 2
- 2 × 3 = 6
- 3 × 4 = 12
- 4 × 5 = 20
- 5 × 6 = 30
- 6 × 7 = 42
Shortcut: Differences are 4, 6, 8, 10, so next difference = 12 → 30 + 12 = 42
Question 2: Percentage
If A's salary is 20% less than B's salary, by how much percentage is B's salary more than A's?
Solution: Let B's salary = 100 Then A's salary = 80
Percentage increase needed = (100-80)/80 × 100 = 20/80 × 100 = 25%
Shortcut Formula: If A is x% less than B, then B is [x/(100-x)] × 100% more than A = [20/(100-20)] × 100 = 20/80 × 100 = 25%
Question 3: Profit and Loss
A shopkeeper sells an article at a profit of 25%. If he had bought it at 10% less and sold it for ₹7 less, he would have gained 30%. Find the cost price.
Solution: Let CP = ₹100 Original SP = ₹125 (25% profit)
New CP = ₹90 (10% less) New SP for 30% profit = 90 × 1.30 = ₹117
Difference in SP = 125 - 117 = ₹8 When difference is ₹8, CP = ₹100 When difference is ₹7, CP = (100/8) × 7 = ₹87.50
Question 4: Time and Work
A can complete a work in 12 days and B can complete the same work in 18 days. They work together for 4 days, then A leaves. How many more days will B take to complete the work?
Solution: A's 1 day work = 1/12 B's 1 day work = 1/18
(A+B)'s 1 day work = 1/12 + 1/18 = (3+2)/36 = 5/36
Work done in 4 days = 4 × 5/36 = 20/36 = 5/9
Remaining work = 1 - 5/9 = 4/9
B will complete 4/9 work in: (4/9) × 18 = 8 days
Question 5: Ratio and Proportion
The ratio of ages of A and B is 4:5. After 6 years, the ratio becomes 6:7. What is the present age of A?
Solution: Let present ages be 4x and 5x
After 6 years: (4x+6)/(5x+6) = 6/7 Cross multiply: 7(4x+6) = 6(5x+6) 28x + 42 = 30x + 36 2x = 6 x = 3
A's present age = 4 × 3 = 12 years
Question 6: Simple Interest
A sum amounts to ₹9800 in 5 years and ₹12005 in 8 years at simple interest. Find the principal.
Solution: SI for 3 years (8-5) = 12005 - 9800 = ₹2205 SI for 1 year = 2205/3 = ₹735 SI for 5 years = 735 × 5 = ₹3675
Principal = 9800 - 3675 = ₹6125
Question 7: Compound Interest
The difference between compound interest and simple interest on ₹5000 for 2 years at 8% per annum is:
Solution: Difference = P × R²/10000 = 5000 × 8 × 8/10000 = 5000 × 64/10000 = ₹32
Shortcut: Difference = P(R/100)²
Question 8: Speed and Distance
A train 150m long crosses a platform 250m long in 20 seconds. What is the speed of the train?
Solution: Total distance = 150 + 250 = 400m Time = 20 seconds Speed = 400/20 = 20 m/s
Convert to km/h: 20 × 18/5 = 72 km/h
Question 9: Probability
A bag contains 4 red, 5 green, and 3 blue balls. Two balls are drawn at random. What is the probability that both are red?
Solution: Total balls = 12 Probability = (4/12) × (3/11) = 12/132 = 1/11
Question 10: Data Interpretation
Study the table and answer:
| Year | Sales (in ₹ crores) |
|---|---|
| 2020 | 120 |
| 2021 | 150 |
| 2022 | 180 |
| 2023 | 135 |
| 2024 | 195 |
Q: What is the percentage increase in sales from 2020 to 2024?
Solution: Increase = 195 - 120 = 75 Percentage increase = (75/120) × 100 = 62.5%
Question 11: Permutation
In how many ways can the letters of the word 'LEADING' be arranged so that the vowels always come together?
Solution: Word: L-E-A-D-I-N-G Vowels: E, A, I (3 vowels) Consonants: L, D, N, G (4 consonants)
Treat vowels as one unit: (EAI) + L + D + N + G = 5 units These can be arranged in 5! ways Vowels within can be arranged in 3! ways
Total arrangements = 5! × 3! = 120 × 6 = 720
Question 12: Average
The average of 11 numbers is 50. If the average of the first 6 numbers is 48 and the average of the last 6 numbers is 52, find the 6th number.
Solution: Sum of 11 numbers = 11 × 50 = 550 Sum of first 6 = 6 × 48 = 288 Sum of last 6 = 6 × 52 = 312
6th number = (288 + 312) - 550 = 600 - 550 = 50
Question 13: Mensuration
The diagonal of a square is 10√2 cm. What is its area?
Solution: For a square: Diagonal = Side × √2 Side = 10√2/√2 = 10 cm Area = 10 × 10 = 100 cm²
Shortcut: Area = Diagonal²/2 = (10√2)²/2 = 200/2 = 100 cm²
Question 14: HCF and LCM
The HCF of two numbers is 12 and their LCM is 360. If one number is 72, find the other.
Solution: Product of two numbers = HCF × LCM 72 × Other number = 12 × 360 Other number = (12 × 360)/72 = 60
Question 15: Allegation
In what ratio must water be mixed with milk costing ₹48 per litre to get a mixture worth ₹36 per litre?
Solution:
Using allegation rule:
Water (₹0) _______ Milk (₹48)
\ /
₹36
/
(48-36)=12 (36-0)=36
Ratio = 12:36 = 1:3
Reasoning Questions with Solutions
Question 1: Syllogism
Statements:
- All roses are flowers
- Some flowers are red
- No red is blue
Conclusions: I. Some roses are red II. No flower is blue
Solution: Only Conclusion I follows (Some roses which are flowers can be red) Conclusion II does not follow as only "some flowers" are red, not all.
Question 2: Coding-Decoding
If COMPUTER is coded as RFUVQNPC, how will MEDICINE be coded?
Solution: Pattern: Each letter is shifted by +1, +2, +3... alternatively C(+1)→R, O(+2)→F, M(+3)→U, P(+4)→V, U(-1)→Q, T(-2)→N, E(-3)→P, R(-4)→C
Wait, let's check reverse: R-F-U-V-Q-N-P-C Actually it's: First 4 letters +1,+2,+3,+4 and last 4 -1,-2,-3,-4
MEDICINE → F(O), N(E), F(F), O(O), J(H), G(G), F(F), J(N) Correct code: FOJHGFFJ or applying same: EOJDJEFM
